Been away for quite some time! I'm thinking about transitioning slowly back in though; I posted something the other day and kinda forgot how nice it is to be able to read and respond to comments directly.

What have I been up to? Mostly making games (both facebook and mobile), but I recently transitioned back to freelance to finish an interesting business-oriented book that I am finding pretty fulfilling. And some illustration work, and some other comics... Also working on my own stuff but of course freelance and commissions are a priority :)

I think I'm happier now than I've been in a while: I live in a pretty cool area, have cool friends who do lots of different and interesting things, and for the first time in a while, free time with which to do my personal stuff. Big change from my usual working-my-ass-off-and-barely-having-time-to-breathe schedule. Also freelancing lets me choose the kind of thing I want to work on, which is a nice change from games (for now). I really can't wait to get my own comics going again, which will be pretty soon.

Anyways, that's enough about me... I'd ask "what's up with you guys" but that seems kinda lame. How about, "what would you like to be working on the most right now (and are you)?" Any cool projects, ideas, etc?

D-does... that mean you're back? You don't know me but I've missed looking at your stuff so much.

Would we see any more of The Meek by any chance?
shingworks Featured By Owner Jul 31, 2014  Professional Digital Artist
Yep, I'm back :) Kinda heavy in devmode right now but definitely working on stuff for public consumption... Meek stuff is complicated atm, and I'll be working on it when things get less complicated, but I'll likely complete a new comic before that happens (its coming soon!!)

As long as you're back, I'm happy :)

Excited to see the new comic. I'll keep my eyes peeled.

Welcome back!
I've missed seeing your posts, but it's great to hear that you're well and with new-found inspiration.
I hope you know that your work inspires us as well ;]

I'm really glad to hear you're doing alright! I've just been trying to improve my technique overall instead of throwing stuff on the page, and also dipping my toes into comics. (in no small part due to being inspired by you!)

I'm so excited to see that you're back! :D I loved the Meek, and was actually inspired by it to start writing my own graphic novel. It's currently still in the writing phase (Story, Characters, etc...) though. Anyways, I'm glad you can dou what you love. :D Also, will you be at The San Diego Comic Con this year? If so, I'd love to stop by and buy some prints or comics if I can :D
shingworks Featured By Owner Jul 17, 2014  Professional Digital Artist
No, no cons this year unfortunately :( Fortunately, the reason is cuz I'm making books, haha... I'll be around places next year probably :D

Thrilled to see you back on Deviantart, and absolutely stoked that you're continuing The Meek.  I hope your RL troubles are over, and glad I kept watching for you so that I could see your triumphant return, even if I saw it late.

I'm glad to hear that you are happy. I have always liked your work and was a bit sad to see updates stop on your projects (although I also sympathise with needing to take a break). It is good to have you back.

For what it's worth, I am doing a lot more sculpting of small sculpey monsters.

Sorry for the late reply! It's great to see you back. :3
I've loved your artwork and your older tutorials had an impact on the way I drew comics back in 2010! As for me, I'm also trying to get back into drawing web comics too. It's pretty difficult when your life is consumed with work and other life-ish things, and recently, I got the double whammy and was diagnosed with the cancers, (but it should be easy to treat at my age so I'm not gonna worry) so now that I'm not working at the moment, I have no reason to not draw. :P It's still hard though! Anyway, glad to see you are back, we've all missed you, and looking forward to any new art!

It's nice to hear from you :) Glad things have been turning out better for you. Only thing I've been doing really is trying to get myself into making art a little more often, with trade and contests.

I've actually been having fun with sculpting. Laying down the pen for a while has been nice, and there's just something so therapeutic about clay. Specifically, I've had fun making wax seals for friends, and commissions. Just fun little doo-dads' (:

Ahhh, it's been a really long time. It's good to see you've been doing well. :)

I'd like to be working with a bunch of cool people to make a short film, and yes! I am totally doing that!
But maybe I should be focusing on getting a job, soon, I've almost graduated...

First of all, welcome back! :D
I'm glad to see that you are doing well and hope you will be able to make many good works in the future! Can't wait to see and respond to them! ^_^

Right now I am working on a motion comic myself. :D
It's called bionoid and you can see the prologue right here!…

Hey! I'm a big fan of your work, and I'm glad to see you are doing better now. As for me, I'm really inconsistent as an artist, but I'm slowly getting to work more on my writing projects. I just started sketching what I hope will become my first full-fledged novel, as well as returned to this fan fiction I have been writing and rewriting for about two years now :P

I'm a huge fan of your works, and it's exciting to hear that your comics will be updating again soon!
I also didn't know that you were in the process of making some games, so I can't wait to see and hear more about those!
I follow you on tumblr, but lately I haven't been on tumblr much (even less dA), so it's good that I finally got to catch an update from you haha!
I've been meaning to work on a few art projects I've had and work a little bit more on my realism (and actually produce some more art since I haven't done any quality stuff in a while), but between summer school and work, I've had less time than I'd like haha,,,
But anyways, I really look forward to seeing more of your stuff. I'm super excited since you've been one of my role-model artists since eighth-grade! It's great to hear that you have more free time and that you're having a better time in general with work and your schedule! uvu

I've been thinking lately of some interesting jewelry I could make, but I have so many other things that need doing first, it'll probably be a while! I'll also have to save up some money, because I'll need to buy some new supplies (notably, a jeweler's saw and some copper to work with).

I literally just finished making a colored animatic boards for a tech demo game and man I'm glad for the 2 week break from the work, I get to now work on my personal project and hopefully before my birthday next month I can finally start producing actual comic pages.

Good to see you back.  Seems like a few people have been making a tepid return around here.

I'd like to be working on video games, but I have no portfolio to really speak of right now, so right now I'm just doing some rando-ass dicking around in 2D/3D.  I really just need someone to challenge/demand something of me and I make it.  Immediately, I'm planning a silly fanfic thing that makes me feel super lame.

I'm so glad to hear things are going well for you! Definitely looking forward to seeing more comics again from you (either Zhao or Non-Zhao-related! hehe)

Currently working on the second graphic novel in my series which is pretty intense, challenging and fun because I'm juggling it with the day job. Making a million decisions for it every day like today for example, wondering if I should be speeding through it to make my self-imposed deadline by early next year or do I slow down and really do more with each panel and each page. Of course, I want to do both but I feel like I'll definitely be dropping the ball on one.

Anyway, yeah, I definitely miss the discussion environment on DA, too. :) Take care, Der-shing!

We missed you!!!!!
Well I currently just started a project of five unrelated oil paintings for my 5 friends who lost their home. I was staying the night at some friends apartment last week and when we woke up we discovered it had caught on fire. Everyone got out but they lost everything inside. So I'm currently working on making a William Shatner Startrek painting. Next is a Deadpool painting, then Dragonball Z, something with pianos and something musical.

Glad to hear things are going your way now XD
My sister and I recently just got some of our own work into the public eye. We got our first table at a convention selling prints last year; we've only managed to do two cons so far, but still. We'd like to do more, but money is a serious issue. But, we're still very grateful for the opportunity. We've been getting a few commissions now and again, but our personal projects have been put on the back burner as a result u___u;
We're trying to find a good balance, still. Hopefully our money troubles will be over with sooner rather than later, and we'll be able to really get the ball rolling.

Glad to see you're back and working on personal stuff! Free times are indeed a rarity when working full time. I hope we'll see more of your expressive and colorful art soon :)
As for me, I worked on some story ideas and I believe I have the motivation to see them through.
The comment system of DA is indeed pretty great for easy interaction with watchers/followers/other artists. However, I never made the move to other websites like tumblr and I think it's something I should do. I'm an internet dinosaur.

Well, I don't really do any art, so I guess I'd like to get my ass moving on applying for jobs so I can finally pay off student loans, move out, visit friends, conquer the world, etc.

Nothing small. ;p

I wish I can think of a good comic idea (I'm lost in the art of making up scenarios) so that I can work on my comic skills, but I'm stuck with visualizing Poems and Books into comics instead. Just curious, but do you plan on picking up The Meek? I really miss it and check to see if you have added another page every month or so...

Glad you're still alive and back on track!!!

I'm currently working on a project implying a webcomic, but I feel it might take a while before anything starts. I got my butt kicked up and was fired up in doing it and now everything seems to fell apart... The joy of working with someone on a project. oh well!

Otherwise it's all about working to pay my scholarship, and having time in between to work on improving my 3D abilities...maybe get in touch with Zbrush too. :)

It's nice to see you again!
But I'm currently not really working on anything. I would like to work more on a (I guess) comic idea that me and a friend were developing as well as some of my own stuff. I get discouraged and distracted easily, especially on the days I work. BUT! It is summer break so hopefully I'll try and give myself more time to do the things I really want to do.

ME? I'm busy animating at a studio but I plan on also putting out online comics in the future (sooner, I hope). Right now, my job as a flash animator is what's taking most of my time and it is hard work and I rarely draw anything but at least I still do. kinda Ironic since I'm in the firled and yet it's exactly what drains my time and creativity. ^^;

Always glad to see you posting more, though I always sort of forget to check DevArt... I usually check your tumblr if I want to check on your latest. Point is, I'm really glad to hear you're in a better place!
I had to step down from my last project in March because of mental health issues so my current job is basically getting treatment. But it's going really well, and I've had time to do some independent work scripting a kid's book that my friend is (hopefully) going to illustrate!

After moving cross-country and having a quarter-life crisis at what I ought to be doing versus what makes me happy to be alive (the latter finally winning), I've been getting back in touch with what excites me about life and art and it's wonderful.

What I would like to be working on most right now is television, which I am in that my job involves (young) kids' media production, I'm rewriting an original dramatic pilot for my portfolio, and I'm trying to do a comic/"graphic novel" version of a kid's show pilot, both to practice graphic novel and to potentially have as a sample to work in television later.

Something I have struggled with for about a decade now is that I have equal loves for writing and drawing. I am technically trained in writing, though do have some training in art. But no matter which one I'm doing, I'm sad if I am not equally doing the other one -- and often have panics I've "chosen" the wrong one (though I never give up on either in the long run). I want to do both, but I worry if I don't pick one I won't be competitive in either.

How have you used your two interests/crafts to inform each other? Have you found a sort of balance between biology and art? Do they have to be separate categories for you?

Since you're also someone who trained in something other than art, what was your journey transitioning into art more professionally? Was it something you couldn't stay away from? Was it an active goal? Both? Did you take art classes eventually? How did you transition into art for money instead of just art for you?

Glad to see you're back! I discovered your comic right as you went on hiatus, so I was pretty bummed out. I look forward to some awesome stuff from you!

As for something I want to work on, that would have to be a graphic novel. A lot is going on however, so we shall see.
