Fellas Tutorial by shingworks Fellas Tutorial by shingworks
Finally, the male anatomy counterpart to the ladies tutorial from a month or two ago :B

I decided not to address the male genitalia this time around... one reason being cuz I don't think they are drawn as often as the female parts, and secondly because I suck at them XD I won't link directly but if you click here you can find a separate link to another tutorial that I found interesting on a non-DA art site.

Oh yeah, sorry the colors are hellla ugly. I was feeling uninspired.

Thats it I guess... again, feel free to ref, copy or trace any of this, its all free for you to use. Hope someone gets some use out of it :)

Thank you SOOO much for this tutorial! Manly muscles always confused me, and being a women's fashion designer, I never really concerned myself with men. That is until I got a request to draw a manly man and I was like "fak wat m i goin 2 do"

I ended up creating this: theshoppinggoddess.deviantart.…
after heavily referencing this tutorial and pics of shirtless men on google ;D should I link to you in the deviation?

Before I go on a total favouriting spree, I figured I oughtta drop a comment somewhere. :XD:

Your tutorials are simultaneously incredibly helpful and redonkulously entertaining. My preferred drawing style tends to lean towards the cartoony as well, so that's even better for me. :D

Body hair? Ehh, most men don't have that, the ones who do are usually middle eastern or caucasian.

Here in North korea we are smooth, and the women prefer it.(Only gay men like teh body hair.)
shingworks Featured By Owner Jun 18, 2013  Professional Digital Artist
To be technical, we all have it :) And preference varies as wildly as phenotype.
ImmaculateReprobate Featured By Owner Jun 19, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
That's true, but you claim that the bicep doesn't have body hair when it does, so clearly you mean thick noticeable body hair. Not sure if you're aware of this, but men of african and especially asian descent aren't hairy.. Making the whole body hair comment a bit close minded. (And no, it isn't related to testosterone.)

It sure does, however, body hair is about as high as obesity on the scale of attractive traits.
shingworks Featured By Owner Jun 19, 2013  Professional Digital Artist
Again, kind of depends. Also, as you probably noted if you've read any of my tutorials, all the info here is a general guide and not meant to be taken as 100% accurate for all people of all races or body types. If you're drawing a character with alopecia, or who is prepubescent, or just not very hairy, you wouldn't need to worry about drawing visible body hair.

And for the record yes there are some hairy asian men out there. Not predominately but, you know, they exist. Come to SF in the late summer and you'll see all varieties of male body hair pattern just from walking around.
ImmaculateReprobate Featured By Owner Jun 19, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Yes but you labelled it as if having body hair = testosterone. The fact that blacks have less of the former and more of the latter kind of contradicts that. Or if you're drawing a character who belongs to one of the most populous races in the world..yeah. I get it, but still, to me it just sounds like a really hairy man or a girl/gay who likes hairy men glorifying something that most people find unattractive.

Yeah but the ones that are hairless aren't hairless because of their testosterone, they are because we are humans, and don't have need for body hair, and it's being evolved out because it's ugly and pointless. Anyhow, I know some people like "bears", I just found the body hair bit pointlessly condescending, and inaccurate.

Wow seriously? Way to search for an issue where none is to be found.:D (Big Grin)

"Here in North korea we are smooth, and the women prefer it.(Only gay men like teh body hair.)"
rababco Featured By Owner Aug 18, 2013  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
I don't know about body hair being pointless, it probably has a purpose for people who are from certain regions of the world where they've evolved that way because it was an important adaption for survival. It's probably kind of like skin tone/color; people from places like Africa and the Middle-East have darker skin because it helps protect their skin from the sun while people from the places like Europe have lighter skin to absorb more vitamins from the sun.

My best guess is that body hair is designed to help keep the body warm, which would make sense that Europeans are more likely to have more body hair because Europe is colder and it helps keep them warm. Why men generally have more body hair then women I don't know; it might be because men are more likely to be directly exposed to the cold weather, especially in the past. Though even women from Europe/European descent have a decent amount of body hair; I'm mostly of European descent and I have a fair amount of body hair on my arms and legs. My guess is this is probably the same reason why European men generally have more facial hair or at least are more likely to grow it out because it keeps their face warm. Men from Africa and Asia are probably less likely to have as much body hair because it's hot there and it would cause overheating. This is just a theory, I'm sure there's a good reason some men have more body hair than others but I don't know for sure what it is.

As for finding body hair attractive, it's probably due to what someone is used to. People that are used to seeing hairier men are most likely to find it more attractive than people who are used to seeing men with less body hair. So people who are generally used to seeing men from Europe/European descent are generally going to be used to men with more body hair and so are most likely going to find it more attractive. You probably think body hair is unattractive because you're from North Korea and you're not used to seeing men with body hair. Of course, there's personal preference too, some people are going to find something attractive that other people are going to find unattractive. No offense or anything, I just wanted to explain that body hair is often considered attractive in other places of the world.
